When the pandemic hit and the world shutdown, we knew we must respond. With
essential capabilities in enzymology for fast nucleic acid extraction, together with our expertise in
microfluidics, we were well-positioned to develop a unique solution for the detection of
Our bold vision: to develop a high performance, RT-PCR SARS-CoV-2 saliva test for use outside of the laboratory at the point-of-care where real-time decisions are made. It would be portable for use outside of traditional laboratories. It would use saliva as a simple non-invasive means of testing for respiratory viruses. It would leverage our expertise in whole virus extraction and advanced microfluidics to create a one-of-a-kind PCR system for infectious disease detection.
Our engineers, scientists, and collaborators got to work bringing this vision to life. MicroGEM's Sal6830 is the culmination of this work. In less than 30 minutes, the system delivers a PCR result to determine if someone is positive for SARS-COV-2, allowing the right decisions to be made at the point of care to prevent the transmission of the virus to others. And no more worries about sticks up the nose – less than a teaspoon of saliva is all that’s needed.
The name, ‘Sal’, signifies our technical roots in saliva. Our Sal6830 saliva test is the first of many tests we expect to develop for the management of infectious diseases and other personalized medicine applications.
The numbers ‘6830’ are at the heart of our company. These numbers pay tribute to June, a friend of the MicroGEM family who lost her life to COVID-19 early in the pandemic. We use these numbers, representing June's name and birthdate, in remembrance and respect for all people who have been affected by this devastating disease.
The beautiful climbing nasturtiums inspire hope and renewal and are a visual reminder of our commitment to building a healthy, sustainable future.
Fast. Robust. Powerful. On-the-spot. A new choice to fight COVID-19. That’s Sal6830.
